It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Thomas Hradec on January 10, 2024 in Cranbrook, BC.

Tom Hradec, born on January 6, 1944, in Victoria, BC, and raised in Prince Albert, SK, dedicated a significant part of his life to serving in the Canadian Army. Enlisting in 1962, he served with the First Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, with postings in Victoria, BC, Edmonton, AB, and Germany. Tom excelled in his military career, earning promotions and participating in notable events, including the Alberta Centennial tour in 1967.

Promoted to Corporal in 1967, Tom continued his service and was posted to Cyprus in 1968. His dedication led to further promotions, reaching the rank of Master Corporal in 1972. After postings in Germany and Canada, he was honorably discharged in 1975. Tom then transitioned to Alberta Correctional Services, where he worked until his retirement in 2002.

Post-retirement, Tom settled near Moyie, BC, and remained actively involved in veterans’ affairs. He served as the National President of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping during the 2000s and received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in 2008 for his outstanding contributions. Tom Hradec leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and leadership.

Tom is survived by his wife Marianna, stepdaughter, step grandchildren and other loving family members.

As per Tom’s wishes, cremation took place at the McPherson Funeral home in Cranbrook, B.C. with interment at a later date at Mountain View Memorial Gardens: Garden of Veterans Field of Honour, in Calgary, AB.
Celebration of Life is planned for February 6, 2024 at 1pm at the Royal Canadian Legion (#285), 9202 Horton Rd SW, Calgary, AB
