25 May 1945 – 17 Sept 2024 (79)
1 PPCLI

It is with profound sadness that the family of Richard James (Dick) Robinson announces his passing at the age of 79 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Elaine, his sister, Lynn Griffin and his parents, Bob and Betty Robinson.

Dick was born in Calgary but spent his formative years in Saskatoon. Immediately after high school, he joined the army and attended Royal Roads in Victoria and then the Royal Military College in Kingston, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1967. His first posting was with 1 PPCLI in Edmonton and he was part of various regimental assignments in both Canada and overseas, notably United Nations peacekeeping duties in Cyprus and NATO forces in Germany. In 1976, after 13 years of army life, Dick became a civilian once again and began his career in human resources management with Woodwards. Subsequently, he worked for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, at the Calgary Regional Health Authority and, finally, established his own consulting business specializing in compensation and benefits.

To say Dick was an enthusiastic traveller would be an understatement. After he and Elaine retired, they started on their bucket list, going from country to country by plane, train, automobile, and ship. He continued collecting miniature flags for his cherished flag bowl after Elaine’s death in 2016. He had managed to visit 70 countries until COVID and his deteriorating health forced him to stop. Dick was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humour, and enjoyment of a good discussion. Some would call him detail-oriented – nothing was done without a precise plan and lengthy lists.

Dick leaves to mourn his daughter Christine Nault (Philippe) and son Scott Robinson (Erin). His granddaughters, Arianne and Nathalie Nault, will miss their special times with Grandpa, notably “cheese o’clock”, which always seemed to coincide with his own “beer o’clock.” He is also survived by his sister, Pat (Robinson) Duggleby, nephew Jeremy Duggleby and niece Kate (Duggleby) Simard, as well as his many friends and army buddies.

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held on October 18, 2024, at 6:00 pm in the “Gin Room” at Vaycay Brewing, 2566 Flanders Ave SW, Calgary. Dress is casual and libations will be served, just as Dick would have wanted it. Christine and Scott send their heartfelt thanks to all who assisted Dad in his final years, in particular the staff at Proactive Seniors, Staywell Manor Village, Rockview Hospital and SkyPointe Hospice, along with special friends Gerry Walker and Pat and Elizabeth Dolan. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Lung Association or a charity close to your own heart.
