It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Jason Tyler Burke, who left us on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the age of 41 years. Jason’s vibrant spirit and boundless energy will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on May 4, 1983, in Prince George, BC, Jason was the son of Tom and Glenis Burke. Growing up in a log home in the country, built by his parents, Jason’s early years were shaped by a close-knit family life and a strong sense of love and adventure. He was a sweet and sensitive child, enduring the playful mischief of his older sister before heading to Edmonton, AB, in pursuit of a life of service.
Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Jason proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he honed a deep sense of discipline, duty, and commitment to helping others. He was stationed in Edmonton, AB, and completed two tours in Afghanistan in 2004 and 2008 under B Company, 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, before his release in 2009.
After his military career, Jason pursued his passion for fitness and became a successful CrossFit competitor, ranking 7th nationally at his peak. His love for fitness extended beyond competition; it was about pushing personal limits, building community, and helping others grow. He became a trusted coach and mentor at Crossfit Calgary, using his knowledge and wisdom to inspire others to reach their full potential. For many years, Jason thrived as part of the team at Optimum Performance Training before taking a leap of faith in 2024, when he started his own business as a contractor for Brute Strength. Here, he valued being able to spend more one-on-one time with his clients and continued to focus on self improvement.
Jason’s life was also defined by the people he cherished. In 2020, he married Nadia Yangui, however, they parted ways in 2022. Eventually, he found love again with his current girlfriend Tori Fiissel, whom he so sadly left behind along with their pup Hemi. Jason was a devoted family member, and family held a special place in his heart along with his near and dear friends.
Jason’s love for life extended far beyond his career and family. A passionate traveller, Jason explored many parts of the world, embracing new experiences and learning from different cultures. His insatiable curiosity and desire for growth were key to the person he became.
Jason will be most remembered for his infectious passion for fitness, his ability to make others feel valued, and his unyielding commitment to personal growth. Whether as a coach, a friend, or a mentor, Jason had a way of making everyone feel seen and heard. His warm smile, encouraging words, and genuine kindness will leave an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Jason is survived by his loving girlfriend, Tori, his sister Stacey (Josh) and their children, Oliver and Jocelynne (Anders), aunt Marie, uncle David, stepmother Karin, stepsiblings, Emery and Maria, as well as cousin Robyn.
He was predeceased by his parents, Glenis and Tom Burke, nephew Christian Lebrun, cousin Brian, uncle Peter, and his Mostert and Burke grandparents, all of whom, he held dear.
In addition to his family, Jason’s friends and loved ones will forever remember him for his sense of humour, loyalty, and caring nature. Whether through laughter at a Flames or Stampeders game, a love of music, a shared book, or his willingness to drop everything to help a friend, Jason’s legacy as a friend and mentor will live on.
Jason lived his life with a fierce love and a belief that “the only limit is the one you place on yourself.” He will be remembered for living every day with a full heart and an unshakable desire to make the world a better place. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Jason. You lived a life well-lived.
