George Dunlop passed away peacefully in Regina, Sask. with his three children by his side.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lyle and Verna Dunlop and a younger sister, Allison MacDougall. He is survived by his sons, Brad (Heather) and Lyle; his daughter Kristin (Steve); and six grandchildren Andrew, Everet, Bennett, Alex, Oliver, and Isabele. Also surviving him are his three sisters, Fran, Beryl, and Barb; three brothers, Bob, Tom and Jim; along with numerous nieces and nephews. His passing will leave a void in the lives of his family, friends and coworkers who knew him well.
Born in Mossbank, Saskatchewan and growing up on the family farm, George realized at a young age that he needed to see the world. George joined the military at age 18, in 1969 and served his first 9.6 years as an infantryman with the First Battalion Queens Own Rifles of Canada and the Third Battalion Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. He changed trades in the military in 1978 and became a Mobile Support Equipment Operator which he continued until his retirement from service in 1995 for a 26-year career.
After his retirement from service, he went on to drive for long distance trucking firms for several years. He then joined the bus driving team at the oil fields near Fort McMurray, Alberta where he became fast friends with many people from across Canada. George retired in December 2021. Upon his retirement, George moved from Calgary, Alberta to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to be closer to and spend more time with his children and grandchildren. As their bond with each other grew stronger, they started calling him Grandpa Gadget because of all the gizmos and gadgets he kept around the house. The sadness of his loss is offset by knowing the joy he experienced spending time with them all.
George also adopted a black cat he named Beaner from the local Humane Society. He loved this cat with all of his heart and also spoiled Beaner with the latest gadgets. George could not sit still for long and once again began driving part time for a local bus company in Moose Jaw. He really enjoyed his trips with the Moose Jaw Miller ball team and also the World Para Ice Hockey Championship teams. Wherever George went, he made friends and he seemed to know someone from everywhere. He was filled with many funny, interesting, and exciting stories that he loved to share, especially with his grandchildren.
George was a lifelong fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders CFL football team. He was particularly pleased that he got to attend his first ever Grey Cup with his son Brad that was hosted in Regina last year. It was a cold night and while his son Brad froze his feet, George kept warm with heated mitts and boots.
The family would like to recognize the professional and empathetic care of the nurses and staff at the Regina General Hospital.
As per George’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will take place at the Eagles Club (561 Home St W) in Moose Jaw on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at 1:00 PM. Please feel free to wear your finest Rider gear in memory of George.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made in George’s name to Moose Jaw Humane Society or Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59, Moose Jaw. In living memory of George, a memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son Ltd.
