6th April 1930 – 13th Jun 2024 (94)
2 PPCLI

Don was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1930. His father died in 1934, having never fully recovered from wounds suffered in the First World War, and Don was raised by his mother, a schoolteacher.

After attending graduate school at the University of British Columbia, Don worked for the Defense Research Northern Laboratory at Fort Churchill in northern Manitoba on the shore of Hudson’s Bay. He joined the Canadian Army in 1957 and spent his career as an infantry officer in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). This took him across Canada, England, Germany and the United States before he retired to Cordova Bay in 1981.

Don married Betty Stephens, whom he met when they were both students at UBC, in 1954. She died, in 2020, as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his son, David (Susan) and daughter, Alison (Dave) and by his grandson, Alexander. Also left to mourn is his cat, Hobo, a stray who adopted him in 2020.
