PRINCESS PATRICIA’S CANADIAN LIGHT INFANTRY’S

ITALIAN CAMPAIGN

Sydney Frost Commemorative Battlefield Tour
16 – 31 May 2024

On 10 July 1943, the Patricias landed on “Sugar” beach as part of 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Infantry Division. The Regiment’s first Battle Honour for World War II was awarded at Leonforte. Join us as we present a replica set of Sydney Frost’s medals to Carabinieri Museum in Ispica and dedicate the first of three Regimental Memorials at Leonforte. Pay your respects to Pte Sidney Cousins, buried at Agria and who had been recommended for the VC for his actions on 22 July 1943.
On 23 May 1944, the Patricias attacked as part of a Divisional assault on the Hitler Line. The Patricias suffered 58 killed, 162 wounded and 27 taken as prisoners of war. 77 men were left standing at the end of the fight. On the 80th Anniversary of this battle, we will dedicate our second Regimental Memorial.
We then move to Ortona where we will visit Villa Rogatti where Cammy Ware was awarded the DSO, learn about the battle, host a Remembrance Service and share lunch with local villagers.
We will travel north towards the Gothic Line, San Fortunato and Rimini. We will dedicate the third and final Regimental Memorial on 28 May at Osteria Nuova on the Gothic Line.
The Regiment fought in Sicily and Italy for 20 months and 16 of 18 World War II Battle Honours were awarded due to actions in Sicily and Italy. We fought and shed blood as part of the 2nd Brigade with The Loyal Edmonton Regiment and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.
